永観2年(984年)に比叡山延暦寺の僧・戒算が夢告により阿弥陀如来を安置したのが始まりで、正暦3年(992年)に一条天皇の勅許を得て本堂が創建された。応仁の乱や豊臣秀吉による聚楽第建設などで度重なる移転や焼失を経験したが、元禄6年(1693年)に東山天皇の勅によって現在地に移転・再建された。
