The shrine was founded when Nanbu Nobunao enshrined Sakakiyama Inari Daimyojin (Toyuke-no-Ookami) within the castle grounds during the construction of Morioka Castle in 1597 (Keicho 2). This deity had been revered since the time of Minamoto no Yoshimitsu, and the shrine was established as the chief guardian of Morioka's city development. It was temporarily abolished due to the abolition of the han system and establishment of prefectures in 1871 (Meiji 4), but was rebuilt at its current location on Kitayama in 1930 (Showa 5).
