History
The founding date is unknown, but it is said to have been established by Toyokata, the Lord of Kido Castle and Saito Saemon-no-Jo. The shrine buildings were destroyed by the Enryaku Mountain Fire in 1578 (Bunmei 9). In 1578 (Tensho 6), Saito Jujufu Shuho reconstructed the shrine and re-invited the Great Deity of Kike from Hieizan as Jissenji Gongen. Until the early Meiji era, the shrine was known as Jissenji Gongen Shrine. It has a long history of enshrining Hira Shrine as its local tutelary deity.
