History
In the early Kamakura period, the monk Shunjo-bo Jogen established a site for continuous Nembutsu (recitation of the Buddha's name). The temple was destroyed by war during the Nanbokucho period. In the first year of the Bunko era (1381 CE), the monk Keiyo began a 28-year effort to gather funds for its reconstruction. The temple's name derives from Keiyo's later title, 'Jukyo Shonin' (Venerable Jukyo).
