Tachibana Shrine
茂原市本納738
A shrine listed in the Engishiki codex, located in Honno, Mobara City, Chiba Prefecture. It enshrines Otohime (Princess Otohime) as its main deity. An ancient tomb mound, believed to be the mausoleum of Princess Otohime, remains behind the main hall (honden).
History
According to tradition, the shrine was founded in the 40th year of the reign of Emperor Keikō (the 12th emperor). It is said that during Yamato Takeru's eastern campaign, he encountered a violent storm at sea. His consort, Princess Otohime, threw herself into the sea to save him from the danger. In gratitude, Yamato Takeru built a mausoleum for her, enshrined a comb, and planted a tangerine tree to honor her memory. In the first year of the Genkei era (877 CE), the shrine was granted the rank of Junior Fifth Rank, Upper Grade, and Fifth Class of Merit. In the eighth year of the Genkei era (884 CE), it was elevated to the rank of Senior Fifth Rank, Upper Grade, and Fifth Class of Merit.
