Established to enshrine the spirits of those who died in the Boshin War between Meiji 1 and Meiji 2, as well as those who fell in the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese Wars. Construction was completed in Meiji 34. Originally named Rekotsusha (Soul-Invoking Shrine) in Meiji 6, it was renamed Esashi Gokoku Shrine in Showa 14, then Matsunoyama Shrine in Showa 22, before finally adopting its current name, Hiyama Gokoku Shrine, in Showa 45.
