Legend holds that the shrine originated in the 65th year of Emperor Nintoku's reign when the ancestor of the Wani clan enshrined Emperor Ōjin to pray for victory in battle after defeating the bandit Susano in the Hida Province. During the Edo period, the Kanasawa clan protected it as their clan deity. It was renamed Hachiman Shrine in the Meiji era and became a prefectural shrine in 1932 (Shōwa 7). Although the shrine was destroyed in the Great Takayama Fire of 1875 (Meiji 8), the current shrine buildings were constructed in the 1970s.
