Sakurayama Shrine
〒020-0023 岩手県盛岡市内丸1−42 桜山神社
Located in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, this shrine enshrines the spirits of the Nanbu clan and has long been revered as a guardian deity of the region.
History
In the mid-Edo period, specifically in the second year of Kan'en (1749), the eighth lord of the Morioka Domain, Nanbu Toshimichi, erected a shrine within Morioka Castle to honor the legacy of the first lord, Nobunao. It was initially dedicated as Awajimaru Daimyojin. In the ninth year of Bunka (1812), it was renamed Sakurayama Daimyojin, after which the spirits of the Nanbu clan were gradually enshrined together. During the Meiji era, the current shrine buildings were constructed at the site of the former third bailey and Hatsumori-shita Kurwa of Morioka Castle, where the deities were re-enshrined.
