It is said to have been founded approximately 1,500 years ago by Kanoya Kamon no Su, a close aide to Emperor Buretsu. During the Meiji era, it was designated as a village shrine. In the Taisho era, the main hall was rebuilt, and the shrine was designated as a recipient of offerings of food, silk, and money to the deities. Following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, comedian Kano Hideko announced that he would become the successor to the shrine.
