It is said to have been founded in 597 CE (Suiko 5) and is recorded in the Nihon Sōkoku Fudoki (Comprehensive Provinces Gazetteer of Japan). During the Heian period, it was rebuilt by Minamoto no Yoshiiya. In the medieval period, it was revered by military leaders such as the Imagawa, Takeda, and Tokugawa clans. In the Edo period, it was repaired by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu, but it was destroyed by fire in the 1945 Shizuoka air raid.
