During the Yoro era, the monk Itsuka carved an image of Senju Kannon and founded the temple, naming it Seihan. In the early Kamakura period, Hiki Nobukazu restored it by order of Minamoto no Yoritomo, and it is said to have served as the protective principal image of Hojo Masako. In the 2nd year of the Tensho era, Eishun became the restorative founder, and in the 19th year of the Tensho era, Tokugawa Ieyasu granted the temple its lands.
