History
Established in 1344 CE (Kokoku 5) when Kikuchi Takamitsu invited the monk Ho-o Genkai from Shofukuji temple to found it. Takamitsu designated this temple as his family's memorial temple (bodaiji) to repay the debt of gratitude to the monk who had taken care of him as a child when his father, Kikuchi Takeki, died in battle. Although the temple declined along with the fall of the Kikuchi clan, it was once counted among the Ten Great Zen Monasteries (Juppatsu) of the Rinzai sect.
