According to shrine tradition, it was founded during the reign of Emperor Koyama (the 8th emperor) to pray for abundant harvests in the Koshu Plain and to prevent flooding of the Chikuma River. In the late Heian period, the deity Hachiman was invited from Ishizuchi Hachiman Shrine, and it became known as a Hachiman Shrine respected by warriors. It is said that after the main hall was burned down during the Nakamikata Disturbance, the shrine was relocated and rebuilt at its current site.
