Founded in 1595 CE (Bunroku 4) during the Azuchi-Momoyama period by Nichiso, the 12th abbot of Ikegami Honmonji, in Bakurocho. After suffering from several fires, it was relocated to its current location in Kagarazaka in 1793 CE (Kansei 5). It has been venerated as the Bishamonten-sama of Kagarazaka since the Edo period and was considered one of the Three Bishamonten of Edo.
