The shrine is believed to have been founded around 1206 CE when Toyoshima Saemon-no-jō Kiyoyasu of the Toyoshima clan enshrined branch spirits (bunrei) of Susanoo-no-Mikoto and Inada-hime-no-Mikoto, transferred from Hikawa Shrine in Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture. The original structures were completely destroyed by a fire in 1889 and an air raid in 1945, and the current shrine buildings were completed in 1958.
