Founded in 996 CE by Junchi-bo as a Tendai sect temple, it later fell into disrepair. In 1235 CE, Gyo-en became a disciple of Honen and built a thatched hut on the site of the former Tendai temple. In 1470 CE, the temple was revived following a visit by Rennyo and relocated to its current location.
