The temple was founded by the high priest Koin as the head temple in Kitayama Village, Uji District, Yamashiro Province. During the Great Osaka Air Raid, everything was destroyed except for the Mizukake Fudo Myo-o statue. Later, the temple formed a connection with Chōen-ji, which transferred the main deity and built the current main hall.
