Founded in 1598 by Nichiren sect priest Shinnyo, this temple received external protection from Satsuma merchant Hanbei during the late Edo and early Meiji periods. It reached its peak of prosperity when Sakamoto Ryoma hid there and the Dutch physician Bowning resided on its grounds. Although most of the structures were destroyed in the Great Osaka Air Raid of 1945, the temple was subsequently rebuilt and restored to its current form.
