Founded in 1607 CE (Keichō 12) by the monk Nichiraku, who belonged to Honjō-ji, the head temple of the Hokke-shu Jinmon-ryu branch located within the territory of the Sanjō domain. During the tenure of the second abbot, Nichishō, the temple was relocated to the Nagaoka castle town, and then moved to its current location in 1650 CE (Manji 3). It was destroyed by fire during the Northern Echigo War but was rebuilt in 1902 CE (Meiji 35).
