Nisshin left Myohon-ji following a dispute over the interpretation of the Lotus Sutra and established this temple in Shijo-Omiya in 1488. Although it was destroyed by fire during the Tenbun Disturbances, it was returned to Kyoto and rebuilt on its current site by imperial decree from Emperor Go-Nara. The main hall, patriarch's hall, and treasure house survived the Tenmei Great Fire, earning the temple the nickname 'the temple that did not burn.'
