In 1314, the saint Nichiro granted the temple its mountain and temple names and recognized it as the first patriarch, leading to its renaming as Chokugyama Honjoji. After the Meiji era, it was officially designated as part of the Nichiren Shu school in 1898 and as the Jinmon-ryu branch of the Nichiren Shu school in 1951.
