Horrinji (Horrin Temple)
京都市上京区行衛町457
A Rinzai Zen sect temple affiliated with Myoshinji-ji in Nakagyoku, Kyoto City, commonly known as 'Daruma-ji' (Daruma Temple). The grounds feature the Okigari Daruma-do (Rising Daruma Hall), which houses approximately 8,000 Daruma statues.
History
In 1718 CE (Kyoho 3), exchange merchant Araki Mitsuhina Sozei began renovations, inviting Zen Master Daiyu Sochiku as the founding abbot. The temple was established in 1727 CE (Kyoho 12) as Sanzo-in Horrin Zenji. In 1945, shortly after the war, the Okigari Daruma-do (Rising Daruma Hall) was built to pray for Japan's post-war recovery. Since then, the temple has been affectionately known by its common name, 'Daruma-ji'.
