Legend states that the shrine originated in 724 CE (Kinki 1) when a divine oracle instructed the enshrinement of Hashihabime-no-Mikoto at the summit of Mount Tsunonomine as a deity for national protection and longevity. During the medieval period, notable figures such as Hosokawa Yoriyuki and Magoichi Sadayoshi were devoted followers. However, the shrine was destroyed by fire during the invasion of Awa Province by Chosokabe Motochika in the Tensho era. After collapsing due to the 1946 Nankai Earthquake, it was rebuilt and is now listed as a special shrine under the Association of Shinto Shrines.
