It is said to have been founded in the first year of the Ka'ei era (1012 CE) by Minamoto Sukeyoshi, the first lord of Nekoo Castle. When Minamoto Sukeyoshi was imprisoned under suspicion by the Otomo clan of Bungo Province, he vowed that if he could return safely, he would enshrine Tsuga Gongen in Kuroki. After his return, he invited the deity Tsuga Gongen to the site.
