Jōzen-ji
上越市柿崎区柿崎6389
A Jōdo Shinshū Honganji-ha Buddhist temple located in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture. Its main hall, believed to be the first of its kind in Japan, features an Indian pagoda style and is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan.
History
The temple was established during the Muromachi period. During the Edo period, it functioned as an outpost of the Nishi Hongan-ji (West Hongan-ji) sect and served as the residence for the head priest's representative until the Meiji period. After a major fire destroyed the original structures, the current main hall was built in 1928 CE (Shōwa 3) in the Indian pagoda style. The temple grounds also contain a historic site where the founder Shinran is said to have stayed during a journey.
