The temple's origins are said to date back to the period between 1570 and 1590, when the 11th abbot of Honganji, Senju, traveled to Mino Province to preach. During this time, the local landowner Ichiryu Naotaka became a believer and converted to the faith. In 1603, when Abbot Junyo visited the area, Ichiryu Naomori, following his father's last wishes, offered to have a temple built as a branch of Honganji. In 1876, the temple was renamed Gifu Betsuin.
