Founded in 1602 by Shakyōshin. Originally located in Fukakusa Village, Kii District, Yamashiro Province, it moved to Hamamachi Gofuku in 1621 and shared a history with Tsukiji Hongan-ji until the early Shōwa period. After being destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake, it separated from Tsukiji Hongan-ji in 1928 and relocated to its current site.
