井伊家の菩提寺であり、本堂の裏手には歴代藩主や一族の墓所があり、自由に参拝できます。境内は静かで落ち着いた雰囲気で、重厚な建物や古い石垣など歴史を感じさせる景観が広がっています。周辺には龍潭寺や佐和山城跡があり、山門や通用門から入ることができます。
