According to tradition, in the 7th year of Yōrō (723 CE), the monk Gyōki carved the principal image of Yakushi Nyorai and founded the temple. Later, Kūkai performed rituals to pray for a bountiful harvest of the five grains. When he struck the altar in front with his vajra staff, clear water gushed out and formed a pool as smooth as a mirror, which gave rise to the temple's current name.
