Founded in 1622 CE (Genna 8) by the priest Sasaki Roton in Sakumacho, Kanda, Edo, it was relocated to Tsukiji due to the Meireki Great Fire and served as a sub-temple of Tsukiji Honganji. After being damaged in the Great Kanto Earthquake, it was moved to its current location in 1927 CE (Shōwa 2) following urban redevelopment.
