The shrine is said to have been founded in the 5th year of Emperor Kinmei's reign when, during a divination by Kuri-sato Kuma, Susanoo-no-Mikoto descended and the site was named 'Sakura-gu (Cherry Blossom Shrine).' In the 1st year of the Daiho era (701 CE), it was relocated to Yagumo Road Mountain at the request of the Suga Kuni-no-miyatsuko (provincial governor) of Izumo Province, and renamed 'Takimiya (Waterfall Palace)' due to the nearby rapids. Later, following a great flood in the 22nd year of the Enryaku era (803 CE), the shrine was moved to its current location.
