According to tradition, the temple was founded in 808 CE when Ennin carved a statue of Fudo Myoo based on a divine figure he saw in a dream. Later, Emperor Saga bestowed the imperial title 'Tai-ei' (Great Wisdom), which became the temple's mountain name. In 1630 CE (Kan'ei 7), by order of Tenkai, it became a branch temple of Tōei-kan'ei-ji and, under the patronage of Tokugawa Iemitsu, its magnificent complex was restored.
