History
Following the decree to abolish the Daijōkan (Ministry of the Grand Council of State) in 1870 (Meiji 3), the shrine was established in 1876 (Meiji 9) as the Kumamoto headquarters of the Shinkyo Kyoin (Divine Palace Academy) within Kumamoto Castle, but it was destroyed by fire during the Satsuma Rebellion. It subsequently moved to Tedori Honmachi and Takumi-machi before relocating to its current site in 1926 (Taisho 15), where a new main hall and other structures were built. The enshrined deities were formally transferred to the new location in 1927 (Showa 2). The shrine was re-established as a shrine in 1946 (Showa 21) and is currently under the jurisdiction of the Association of Shinto Shrines.
