History
It is said to have been founded in the 65th year of Emperor Suinin's reign on an islet in the Kumano River, on the site of the current Osaibara. During the Heian period, it was listed as a shrine in the Engishiki codex and was so bustling that it attracted visits from figures such as Emperor Toba and Emperor Go-Shirakawa. In 1889, the great flood in the Totsukawa area washed away many of the shrine buildings. Currently, the Upper Four Shrines have been relocated to their present location and are enshrined as a shrine listed in the supplementary table.
