During the period of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism, it flourished as a major spiritual site for Kumano Shugyo (Kumano mountain asceticism). In the Meiji and Taisho eras, it was designated as a Goshya (Village Shrine) and later a Kenja (Prefectural Shrine).
