It is said that during the reign of Emperor Keikō, Yamato Takeru established an altar at the foot of Mount Omori on his journey to the eastern provinces and enshrined Niihiko-no-Mikoto. Later, when Yamato Takeru passed away, Emperor Keikō built a shrine building to enshrine him alongside the original deity. The Engishiki (a 10th-century codex) lists it as one of the 100 official shrines within the province of Mutsu. In 1872 (Meiji 5), it was designated as the only Gōsha (village shrine) in Iku District.
