The exact date of founding is unknown, but it is said to have been established by the monk Gyōki. The Kannon Hall, which was destroyed by a fire in 1694 CE (Genroku 7), was rebuilt with a new statue of Kannon. The ashes of the original statue were enshrined within the new image.
