This Soto sect temple was founded to mourn Maeda Toshinaga, the second lord of the Kaga Domain. It was later renamed Zuiryuuin by Maeda Toshitsune, taking its name from Toshinaga's posthumous Buddhist name. Construction began in 1645 CE (Shoho 2). The temple received protection from the Maeda family throughout the early modern period and features a temple complex layout modeled after the Jingshan Wanshou Temple in China.
