The temple's origins are said to trace back to the Kenkyu period of the Kamakura era, when a couple named Takami and Nachi-Ami enshrined a Kannon statue they received in Ise Province at the summit of Mount Kamagatake. It was established as Hakka-san Amami-ji around 1571, with Zen master Kuzo as the founding abbot. After a period of revival, the main hall was rebuilt during the Kanbun era. Today, both the main hall and the old Kannon Hall are designated as Important Cultural Properties.
