The shrine is said to have been founded during the reign of Emperor Nintoku, originating from the emperor's subduing of the Nashima miko-gami (priestess deity) during a royal tour. Until the Meiji Restoration, it was known as Nashima Myojin or Nashima Benzaiten. In 1873 CE (Meiji 6), it was renamed Nashima Shrine. During the Taisho era, Suzoo-no-Kami Shrine, Kumano Shrine, and Hachiman Shrine were successively merged into it.
