Ikuta-jinja
〒650-0011 兵庫県神戸市中央区下山手通1丁目2
One of the representative shrines of Kobe, it is affectionately known locally as 'Ikuta-san'. Because it has repeatedly been destroyed by disasters and rebuilt, it is revered as the 'reviving kami' (deity).
History
It is said that the shrine originated when Empress Jingu, upon returning from her expedition to the Three Kingdoms of Korea, enshrined Himehi-no-Mikoto on Mount Fuyun based on divine revelation. During a great flood in 799 CE (Enryaku 18), when the shrine buildings tilted, the sacred object was carried on someone's back; the place where they could no longer walk in the Ikuta forest became the current site. In 806 CE (Daito 1), the imperial court granted the shrine tax-exempt households, which became the etymological origin of the current place name Kobe.
