Its founding is attributed either to the time of Emperor Jimmu's Eastern Expedition or to the first year of Emperor Keitai's reign. During the Edo period, it was revered by the Sakai clan, lords of the Maebashi Domain, and the approach path was oriented westward. In 1801 CE (Kyowa 1), it was granted the posthumous rank of Sho-i-i.
