Its origins date back to the reign of Emperor Suizei, the second emperor of the human line, when Mount Hakusan Okami was enshrined during the development of waterworks in Kai Province. During the Eisho period, the shrine was relocated in connection with Takeda Shingen's father, Takeda Shingen, constructing a castle. In the Bunroku period, Asama Okami was additionally enshrined when construction began on Kofu Castle. Although the shrine was destroyed by fire in the 12th year of the Kyoho era, it was immediately rebuilt.
