According to tradition, in 808 CE, Ennin sculpted the image of a divine being he had seen in a dream, which became the principal statue of Fudo Myo-o. When Ennin threw his ritual implements into the ground, a spring emerged, which he named 'Dokko no Taki' (The Waterfall of the Single Bell). The temple was named 'Ryokusenji' (Temple of the Deep Spring) after this spring. Later, under the patronage of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the magnificent temple complex was restored in 1634 CE (Kan'ei 11).
