The date of founding is unknown. Originally, it was a shrine with Sozonji Temple serving as its head priest (bettou), and it was called Kanagawa Shrine, enshrining Kanagawa Hikomi. During the Kyoho era, it became the chief guardian shrine of Sakato-machi. In the fourth year of the Enkyo era (1747 CE), it was relocated to an adjacent site, and in the second year of the Hoeryaku era (1752 CE), it came to be known as Shirahata Shrine. It is said that Minamoto no Yoshitsune was enshrined together with the main deity in the third year of the Hoji era (1249 CE).
