Sonninji Temple
南砺市相倉
A temple of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha (True Pure Land Buddhism, Hongwanji school) located in the Sokura district of Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture.
History
The predecessor of Sonninji, the Sokura Dojo (practice hall), began as a dojo under the supervision of Soya Honkei-ji. Its origin is said to be when the Sokura Dojo family enshrined images of Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Buddha), the Bodhisattva, and the Six-Character Name and Dharma (Rokuzi Myogo) written by Rennyu in their home. Descendants of Dojo Ryokan served as the dojo masters for generations. In 1949 CE (Showa 24), the temple was granted the name 'Sonninji,' and it is currently known as Sokura Sonninji.
