Sagamoku Ichinomiya Samukawa Shrine

Located in Samukawa Town, Kanagawa Prefecture, this ancient shrine has long been deeply revered by the Imperial Court and samurai families as the Sagamoku Ichinomiya (the chief shrine of the former Sagami Province). The enshrined deities are Samukawa-hiko-no-Mikoto and Samukawa-hime-no-Mikoto, collectively known as Samukawa Daimyojin. Records indicate that offerings were presented during the reign of Emperor Yuryaku (456–479 CE), and tradition holds that the shrine buildings were established in 727 CE (Shoki 4), giving it a history of approximately 1,600 years. It is renowned nationwide as the guardian deity of the 'Happo-yoke' (protection against misfortune from all eight directions), a unique practice in Japan. The shrine is famous for prayers that ward off bad luck related to geography, house orientation, cardinal directions, and auspicious dates, while attracting good fortune. Historical military leaders such as Minamoto no Yoritomo, Takeda Shingen, and successive generations of the Tokugawa family held deep faith here, and today it continues to attract many visitors from across the country.
History
As the Sagamoku Ichinomiya, this shrine enshrines the guardian deity of 'Happo-yoke,' which is considered unique in Japan. It is believed to ward off disasters associated with all directions, geographical conditions, and house orientations.

What visitors say
Known for its Happo-yoke rituals, the shrine grounds exude a solemn atmosphere amidst lush greenery. Prayers are conducted in groups, so waiting times may occur, but the selection of Goshuin (calligraphic seal stamps) and omamori (charms) is extensive. From March onwards, the shrine garden opens, featuring a tea house where visitors can enjoy matcha. The parking lot is spacious and free, but visitors should be cautious of congestion during peak seasons.

The shrine enshrines the only 'Happou-yoke' (Averting Misfortune from Eight Directions) guardian deity in all of Japan. Many visitors come to pray for the removal of all misfortunes related to land, house, and direction. 'Welcome Nebuta' lanterns adorn the area in front of the shrine buildings to celebrate the New Year.
