Its origins lie in 'Yanada DaiMyojin', which worshipped the ancestral deity of Izumo, established by people who reclaimed the land during the reign of Emperor Suinin. In the 2nd year of Yoro (718 CE), by imperial decree of Empress Genmei, it was designated as the head shrine (Sosha) and center for the deities of Sagami Province, and the enshrinement was moved to its current location. During the Heian period, branch spirits of the deities from five powerful shrines within the province were invited to be enshrined here, leading to it also being known as Kokufu Rokusho-gu (Six Deities Palace of the Provincial Government).
