The shrine's origins trace back to the founding of a Myoken shrine by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, the ancestor of the Soma clan. In 1323 CE (Genko 3), Soma Magoemon Shigetada moved to this area and established a shrine to enshrine Myoken, the tutelary deity. The Soma family were devout followers of Myoken faith, and the shrine originated from a Myoken Hall where the domain lord placed a statue of Myoken for veneration by the lower classes. It has been worshipped generation after generation as the tutelary shrine of the Nakamura Domain's Soma clan.
