The shrine was founded in 1323 CE (Genkyō 3) when Soma Magorō Shigetane relocated his domain from the province of Kazusa to this area. He enshrined Myoken, the deity he revered as his clan god, within Odaka Castle. Even after the castle was abandoned in 1611 CE (Keichō 16), the Myoken Shrine continued to be maintained. Following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism after the Meiji Restoration, it was renamed Odaka Shrine and was designated as a prefectural shrine in 1898 CE (Meiji 31).
